Freshwater Shores: Georgian Bay
Estimated distance: 250 km/155 mi.
With its infamous coastline and wind-tortured pines, the Georgian Bay has inspired artists and explorers alike for a hundred years. Whether you're up for a fall cruise through the 30,000 islands, extravagantly sculpted over time by wind and wave, a scenic driving tour, or wish to explore the region by air, the options are yours.
Nestled on the shores of Lake Joseph Delta Rocky Crest was designed by Thomas McBroom and offers up challenging golf into October. Sculpted out of the Canadian Shield it is framed by giant forests of pine, white birch and hemlock with spectacular views. An impressive, beautifully appointed log clubhouse sits atop a giant rock platform overlooking the 18th green.
A small and rural community, Rosseau is located at the upper tip of beautiful Lake Rosseau and history buffs will be interested to know that it was the start of the old Nipissing Colonization Road. Most of the buildings are original architecture, including the still-operating Rosseau Lighthouse, circa 1890. Stop in at the Rosseau General Store. Built in 1874 the two-storey white frame building is much the same as it was 100 years ago. The view from the Rosseau waterfront creates a spectacular mirrored image of the changing landscape.
In nearby Parry Sound, climb the 96-foot lookout at Tower Hill for a breath-taking view of the bay. Legendary hockey star Bobby Orr hails from here and the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame, with its two floors of zones, exhibits and interactive games, is a must-see for hockey fans. As you enter you'll be intrigued by the hockey rink suspended in mid-air approximately ten feet overhead. A portion of the rink boards has been replaced with glass allowing you to view visitors participating in the Hall's interactive games.
To explore the beautiful Thirty Thousand Island region of Georgian Bay, recently designated by the United Nations as a Biosphere Reserve, hop aboard the Island Queen. Cruises depart from the town dock in Parry Sound for two and three-hour sightseeing cruises, travelling into narrow channels and surprisingly close to shorelines, maximizing your opportunities for great photos and allowing for exploration of out-of-the-way places. For a different perspective on the beautiful changing landscape, and a thrilling adventure, take an aerial tour with Georgian Bay Airways. Career bush pilots with thousands of hours of flight experience, they will make your trip memorable. Fly in to the famous Henry's Fish restaurant for lunch or dinner through to the third weekend of September.
Outdoor adventurers will want to set out on an ATV adventure from Log Cabin Inn. This is a great way to explore the region and offers up opportunities to see wildlife, including black bears and moose. For a more indulgent escape, head to the shores of Lake Manitouwabing and the Inn at Manitou where you can hit the links, relax at the spa and savour culinary excellence.
