Waterway Wonders: Kawartha Lakes

Estimated distance: 300 km/187 mi.

An hour northeast of Toronto is the Kawarthas, home to the central stretch of the historic Trent-Severn Waterway; Lock No. 32 in Bobcaygeon was the first lock built on the system. The 101-year-old Peterborough Lift Lock is the highest hydraulic lift of its kind in the world and a great spot to stop, stretch your legs, and watch the passing boats. Take a trip south to Lang Pioneer Village near Keene to view a fascinating display of hand-hooked rugs; spend an extra few hours and try a little "hooking" of your own. Tempt your taste buds with fresh corn on the cob at their Pioneer Corn Roast in early September and enjoy freshly baked apple treats and mulled apple cider, cider pressing and free horse drawn wagon rides during Applefest.

Discover Peterborough's haunted history on a walking tour with costumed guides leading you by lantern-light through East City or downtown Peterborough. Hear stories about witches, legends and ghosts that left their markings from the Hunter Street bridge to the Lift Lock.

Head north to Petroglyphs Provincial Park to view the just over 900 Aboriginal rock carvings on a beautiful marble rock face. There are four scenic hiking trails in the Park and favourites include the 16-km High Falls Trail and the 5.5-km Nanabush Trail. The Victoria Rail Trail, running from Lindsay to Haliburton, is a great route to enjoy cycling against the backdrop of spectacular fall colours. Or take a quick hike along the Minden Wild Water Trail to view the raw beauty of white water rapids along the Gull River.

Continue on to Bancroft where you can check out the mineral riches and mining history of the area at the Bancroft Mineral Museum located in The Old Station. For a different perspective on the fall colours take a half kilometre walk in an old growth White Pine forest at the Haliburton Forest. Walk easily along the suspended canopy boardwalk that winds its way through the tree tops 20 meters above the forest floor.
