The Wine Route: Niagara River Parkway & Wine Country
Estimated distance: 200 km/124 mi.
Once referred to by Winston Churchill as "the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world", the Niagara River Parkway leaves little to be desired. The rock faces of the Niagara Gorge with its dramatic vistas and monuments chronicling the War of 1812 are met with the gently rolling fields of lush vineyards and orchards of Niagara's wine country. The wine route is well mapped and the journey is easily navigated by car, train, and for the energetic, by bike.
This is a temperate wine region that practices extreme viticulture - its wine making on the edge. As a cool climate viticulture area the region produces a range of wine styles - still and sparkling, dry and sweet, red and white. From Beamsville to Jordan and on to Niagara-on-the-Lake you will discover both a difference in growing regions and a range of winery styles.
The bounty of the harvest is everywhere to be enjoyed. Culinary adventures can be as simple as a visit to roadside stands for fresh fruits and vegetables to savouring the exceptional vintages and regional cuisine offered up by winery restaurants. Some of the area's best picnic spots are found at Ball's Falls, a 200-acre conservation area along the Bruce Trail. The Thanksgiving Festival at Ball's Falls brings together more than 140 artisans, living history demonstrations, musicians and children's entertainers for four days in this setting aglow with fall colours.
Twenty Valley is rich in scenic views, wineries, shopping, antique stores and heritage; Jordan has a variety of experiences to capture interest your interest. A Walking Tour of the Village of Jordan is available at the Heritage Museum for $2 and lists 21 sites of historic interest.
