Dynamic Hues: Sudbury - Killarney

Estimated distance: 130 km/81 mi.

Rich nickel deposits embedded in the Sudbury Basin have established this region as a mining centre, however its abundance of lakes and natural settings also make it a favoured destination for outdoors enthusiasts. Some of the best fall colour viewing is found at the A.Y. Jackson Lookout at Onaping High Falls near the town of Dowling, its water plunging over 45 m (148 ft.). Take time to explore the area on one of their hiking trails.

One of Ontario Parks' crown jewels, Killarney Provincial Park is a majestic, mountainous wilderness that protects one of Ontario's outstanding landscapes. Its spectacular jack pine ridge elevations, white quartzite hills and clear deep lakes offer an unparalleled environment for hiking, canoeing and camping. The hike to "the Crack", a day trip from the highway, takes you into an environment of large quartzite boulders - many as large as houses. Stop in the village of Killarney to pick up a delicious snack of fish and chips at Mr. Perch.

Great views down the historic French River from a new footbridge over the river are easily accessible from Highway 69. Further south, Killbear and Massassauga Provincial Parks and Georgian Bay Islands National Park offers the classic windswept pines view over brilliant blue waters and granite islands.
