The Taste Trail: Prince Edward County
Estimated distance: 100 km/62 mi.
Rich and cheery was how Samuel de Champlain described Prince Edward County in the summer of 1615, yet it would take another 170 years for the first settlers to arrive, almost all of them United Empire Loyalists. The independent Loyalist spirit is demonstrated in the ability of county inhabitants to constantly re-invent themselves as their fortunes have rested variously on shipping and marketing, the barley trade with New York brewers, cheese factories, and most recently, burgeoning wineries.
This island is a perfect place to celebrate the bounty of the fall harvest, and, appropriately, home to the Taste Trail. A variety of culinary destinations invite visitors to wine and dine their way across the county to appreciate their regional cuisine ranging including cideries and wineries, cheese factories and chocolatiers. Pick up the self-guided tour map to make sure you don't miss any delectable stops along the way and be certain to bring your cooler to pack your tasty finds in for the trip home.
The last remaining Crystal Palace in North America was built here in 1887, inspired by Joseph Paxton's original Crystal Palace, built for the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, England. The Picton example, by the Prince Edward County Agricultural Society, is still used for community events such as TASTE!,a celebration of regional cuisine that features regional chefs, gifted growers, winemakers and the best beers, cider and cuisine Prince Edward County has to offer.
A Guide to Antique Shops in the County is free and widely available at tourist sites and the Picton visitor centre and a thriving community of artists ensures a wide selection of handmade crafts to admire and add to your personal collection. The annual Prince Edward County Studio Tour was proclaimed as "one of the best tours in Ontario" by Canadian House and Home magazine. The new Arts Trail is available year round and a Canadian first, providing you with a sensuous journey filled with beauty and warm welcomes at every stop.
