Lake Ontario Ports of Call
Wander along the gentle shores of a Great Lake so beautifully framed by the picturesque landscapes of the Northumberland Hills. Savour the sweet scent of apple blossoms and the bounty of the harvest baked into delectable treats. Browse for antiques along lovingly preserved 19th-century streets in little villages that look positively Victorian. Delight in a live performance in Canada's last remaining "atmospheric" theatre. Witness the spectacular spring waterfowl migration. Come hike along trails that transform into inviting avenues for cross-country skiers in this popular four-season destination. Plan your stay in this area known for its historic innscharming bed and breakfasts and superb spas.
 
Must See
This picturesque route abounds with charm, culture and attractions. It's filled with pleasures and treasures like gracious Victorian towns and villages and long sandy beaches. Here are a few "must sees":
  1. Observe the wondrous spring and fall migration of waterfowl, laze on long stretches of sandy beaches and visit the fascinating interpretive centres at Presqu'ile Provincial Park near Brighton.
  2. Learn the fascinating history of firefighting, complete with antique fire trucks, horse drawn fire wagons and artifacts at the Canadian Firefighters Museum in Port Hope.
  3. Delight in a performance in a walled medieval courtyard at Port Hope's Capitol Theatre - Canada's only remaining atmospheric theatre designed expressly for talking pictures in 1930.
  4. Fish, hike, mountain bike, cross-country ski or take a leisurely nature walk north of the Lake Ontario shore through the magnificent Ganaraska Forest - the largest forest in Central Ontario.
  5. Venture back to the 1800s at Barnum House Museum near Grafton for a stunning example of neo-classic Georgian architecture filled with period furnishings, chinaware and implements.
  6. Revive body, mind and spirit at Haldimand Hills Spa Village in Grafton where the charming stone inn at St. Anne's Country Inn and Spa remains the heart of the village.
  7. Stroll along the widest main street in Canada in the village of Colborne, known for its striking historic murals and architecture.
  8. Shop for treasures from the past in the "Antique Capital of Ontario" where Port Hope's main street forms the most significant and complete 19th-century streetscape in the province.
  9. Learn of local history and lore at the Proctor House Museum in Brighton, an early 1800s historical home, rumoured to be haunted by the ghost of a disgruntled associate.
  10. Travel the Apple Route from Port Hope to Trenton and learn about the history of the apple while enjoying the food, culture and attractions of this region.
  11. Experience a blend of culture and nature at the Westben Arts Festival Theatre. World-class music and theatre is brought to the Campbellford area to perform on a stage with a truly unique backdrop. The venue is a magnificent 400-seat, timber-framed barn that opens onto a lush meadow, surrounded by the gently rolling hills of Northumberland County.
