Ontario's Wilderness Region
Discover nature's fondest secrets in this vast expanse of sky-touching evergreens, rugged cliffs, deep canyons, unending waters and an abundance of wildlife, including polar bears and beluga whales. Come relive the glory days of the "gold rush" In mining towns where you can become a prospector panning for gold. Let a floatplane carry you to remote wilderness lodges and camps where the fishing's fantastic year-round and the only way in is by air. Sled along "snow highways" that are part of the world's largest network of groomed snowmobile trails. Plan an adventure that takes you to where the wilderness begins in earnest.
 
Must See
Hop a train chugging through rugged Arctic terrain. Hear Aboriginal elders impart centuries-old wisdom. Watch mining history come alive. And visit museums showcasing achievements by stars of song and ice.
  1. Descend 60 metres (200 ft.) below ground and see the inner workings of a mine on a guided Timmins Gold Mine Tour
  2. Visit the Museum of Northern History in Kirkland Lake that showcases the area's history of mining, prospecting, geology and wildlife.
  3. Board the Polar Bear Express in Cochrane for a train ride down the Arctic Watershed through forests, past lakes, muskeg and tundra scrub brush all the way to James Bay.
  4. Enjoy some tasty, traditional Aboriginal bannock and tea as tribal elders recount the history of the land and culture around Moosonee - Canada's first permanent settlement.
  5. Hear the familiar twang of country music at the Shania Twain Centre in Timmins where her hometown celebrates their superstar with displays of clothing, awards and memorabilia.
  6. Explore a restored 1904 streetcar, a 1922 fire pump, a tugboat and a railway caboose at the Haileybury Heritage Museum.
  7. Climb aboard the Cochrane train car that houses the Tim Horton Museum - a tribute to the life and achievements of this legendary hockey player and donut king.
  8. Make memories of a lifetime at the Polar Bear Conservation and Education Habitat and Heritage in Cochrane, where you can observe and even swim right next to polar bears.
  9. Hop a floatplane and fly into remote resorts where experienced outfitters will provide gear and guide you to the wilderness fishing experience of your dreams.
  10. Strap on a helmet and join friends on a guided All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) adventure through Cochrane's untamed wilderness.
