Slow your pace for landscapes that captured artists’ hearts, the world’s largest freshwater island and fascinating Indigenous culture; every moment here needs to be savoured.

Experience the fabled white quartzite La Cloche mountains rising above clear blue Georgian Bay waters, pink granite shorelines, and windswept pines of the Killarney region, one of the most iconic landscapes depicted by Canada’s Group of Seven artists. DYK: members of this renowned collection of artists were so captivated by Killarney that they were instrumental in turning it into a provincial park in 1964. Paddle the rocky coastline and peaceful park lakes, and climb ‘The Crack Trail’ for a panoramic view of the La Cloche Mountains before an overnight at Killarney Mountain Lodge.

With the mountains in your rear view, cross the swing bridge onto Manitoulin Island, named after Manitou, the Ojibwe word for ‘Great Spirit’. Pick up a bit of local flavour at the Manitoulin Brewing Company (ales are aptly named Cup and Saucer Ale and Bridal Veil Falls Ale). The Cup and Saucer Trail is a nine kilometre long hike that will reward you with extraordinary views. Walk beneath the Bridal Veil Falls, just off the main road in Kagawong.

Connect with Great Spirit Circle Trail in M'Chigeeng for a fully-guided authentic Indigenous experience. Make your own batch of bannock or learn drumming techniques, delve into the art of storytelling or set out on a paddling and walking tour. It’s worth the drive down to the beach at Providence Bay to take in a magnificent Manitoulin sunset after dinner at the Schoolhouse Restaurant.

Attn bikers: this road trip was made for cruising on your motorcycle, especially in fall.
