Feed your appetite for epic outdoor adventure along the rugged shores of legendary Lake Superior.

The largest of North America’s Great Lakes, this natural wonder is called ‘Gichigami’ (Big Water) by the Ojibwe; and rightfully so – the lake has its own version of a tide as well as its own Twitter account. Formed from volcanic activity over a billion years ago, its diverse shoreline undulates between forested wilderness, rocky cliffs and gorgeous beaches.

Ride the rails through great boreal forests and vast canyons on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train. There’s opportunity to stop and explore waterfalls and take in views of the lake from awesome lookout points. Set out on a day of rock climbing in Batchawana Bay with Superior Explorations, hike out to the sacred Agawa Rock Pictographs in Lake Superior Provincial Park and finally, get out on the ‘Big Water’ on a guided SUPing or sea kayak excursion. Naturally Superior Adventures offers a variety of water based adventures, as well as art and photography workshops. Superior has served as a muse for many a photographer and artist.

Extend your journey and head up the north shore to Thunder Bay. Book a day of sailing with Sail Superior; their day trip and overnight Big Lake Adventures are perfect ways to experience more of this Great Lake.

A larger-than-life Ontario road trip deserves classic Canadian road tunes – include Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’, the true story of the wrath of Lake Superior when the gales of November came early in ’75.

The Agawa Rock Pictographs are enduring messages from the past. This is a sacred site where generations of Ojibwe have come to record dreams, visions and events. The pictographs have proven to be remarkably durable, withstanding the harshest of elements. The paintings are, nevertheless, fading and perishing as time wears them down.
