With a greater appreciation of how our environment and our food producers nourish us, chefs and restaurants around the province are crafting menus and dishes that focus on local produce, native ingredients and sustainable farming practices.
On the east side of Bank Street in Ottawa, Clover Food|Drink ethos is local-first, including their drink menu. Treadwell Cuisine in Niagara-on-the-Lake follows the same philosophy with a menu of local, seasonal fare. Café Belong is located in Toronto’s Evergreen Brick Works, and focuses on sustainable, organic fare. The Silver Birch in Thunder Bay serves Northern inspired cuisine made with local meat, cheese and product, as well Lake Superior fish and wild game. The Heather in Hamilton serves seasonally inspired dishes from a set seven course tasting menu with a focus on Canadian ingredients.
In downtown Toronto, the Fairmont Royal York features a rooftop herb garden and beehives that produce fresh herbs, vegetables and honey for the hotel. Elmhirst’s Resort on Rice Lake boasts the Elmhirst’s Own program which produces, grows and raises much of what’s on the menu. Similarly, South Pond Farms, near Peterborough create special event farm to table suppers using food and flowers grown on the property. Ravine Winery’s restaurant in St. David’s follows green practices and produces organic vegetables (as well as amazing wine).
In addition to fresh, local food, make your meal memorable by dining with a view. Not only are Ontario’s golf courses challenging to play but also incredibly scenic with plush greens and manicured fairways. These gorgeous spots also offer fine dining, with a stunning backdrop, particularly during the fall season.
Lago is Eagle’s Nest’s upscale restaurant in Maple, while The Bistro at Copper Creek in Kleinburg overlooks the course and the Humber River Valley. The Marshes is Ottawa’s top public course, and the ambiance at Ironstone Grill is equally top notch. Niagara Parks offers three championship courses, plus a panoramic view of the greens at Whirlpool Restaurant while Legends of the Niagara Restaurant looks out towards the historic War of 1812 grounds. Sweetwater Restaurant at Cobble Beach Resort overlooks the crystal blue waters of the Georgian Bay. Muskoka is not short on splendid scenery. Check out the views from the Antler at Deerhurst in Huntsville, the Gill and Patio at The Rock Golf Club in Minett or the white linen dining rooms at Muskoka Bay Club or the Muskoka lodge style Rocky Crest Golf Club in MacTier.
